McAffrey Calls Attention to Sales Tax Holiday Weekend
OKLAHOMA CITY (August 2, 2010) State Representative Al McAffrey of Oklahoma City today reminded Oklahomans of the upcoming three-day sales tax holiday, wherein at least for one long weekend, some of the financial burden is lessoned for families preparing their children to return to school.
“There have been very few of us immune from the economic crisis of late, and we’re all tightening our belts to weather it out,” said Rep. McAffrey. “I know every little bit of savings counts, and this is one sales tax break that is directly targeted towards hard-working families in hopes of lightening their burden as they brace to prepare their kids for school.”
Beginning at 12:01 am on Friday, August 6th and ending at twelve midnight on Sunday, August 8th, Oklahoma will hold a sales tax holiday giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain items free of state and local sales tax.
Anyone can take advantage of the tax breaks, but they are especially aimed at giving parents a break when purchasing back-to-school items.
The sales tax holiday exempts the sale of clothing and shoes priced at less than $100 from sales taxes. The exemption does not apply to the sale of any accessories, special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use.
All retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday.
“I hope all working Oklahomans participate in this brief but welcome break from sales taxes, as it not only gives us a small reduction in our shopping costs but it also helps support our local economy as it’s an incentive to spend some cash at Oklahoma retailers,” said Rep. McAffrey.
